New Sections of the Newsletter

As you may have noticed last month, I’ve added a couple of new sections to the newsletter. First up is the “Website of the Month” (page 7). This section will hopefully be around every month and will highlight various websites throughout the year.

The other new addition is a “Presentation Calendar”. This section will highlight the upcoming presentations. If you see an “OPEN”, that means that no program is currently scheduled for that month. If you are interested in presenting a program at one of the meetings, give Prez Deppe or Shawn Schwaller a call/email so we can get you scheduled in.

MINUTES FOR AUGUST 7, 2002

Our President, Tom Deppe, called the August 7, 2002 meeting to order at 7:04 PM at Burt Chevrolet with 34 members and guest present.

CORRESPONDENCE:

Cliff Davis reported that he received info about the upcoming 2004 convention, which will be held in Phoenix, Arizona. He also received e-mail from a site in Australia that was selling a bunch of modeling stuff. See Cliff during the break if interested.

TREASURY:

Dallas Lloyd reported a balance of $3017.58 in the treasury, $736.04 belongs to the contest fund.

NEW BUSINESS:

Tom Deppe picked up a flyer from the Oklahoma City table about their upcoming 2003 IPMS Convention. It will be held on July 2^nd to the 5^th.

SHOW & TELL:

Gerry Gustavson had a 1/25 AMT 1971 Dodge Charger Street Machine. Cliff Davis showed us a couple of 1/24 die cast NASCAR racers, one of them OOB, and the other one was detailed painted to bring out the detail. Bob Nixon had a completed 1/72 Tamiya F4D Skyray, a 1/72 X-2 resin kit from France, and the latest 1/35 M-26 Pershing kit from Tamiya. Doug Decounter brought a 1/35 Dragon Panther, a couple of 1/35 Academy M-3 Stuart/Honey tanks, a 1/35 Dragon M-26 Pershing, and a 1/16 Tamiya Kubelwagen that was under construction. Carl Barna had a book titled Carrier War Book. Earl Hosmer showed us the base for the display of A-4 Skyhawks aircraft that he is building. John Holcomb found and completed a Polar Lights kit of a Jetson’s spaceship. Dave Nelson brought his two sons, Kyle and Mick, who completed a 1/35 Tamiya Sdk.Fz 222 armored car and a 1/35 Tamiya Tiger I. Derek Brown showed us in IPMS Nationals Triathlon winning entry. It consisted of a 1/35 Tamiya Kubelwagen, a figure, and his 1/43 NASCAR Thunderbird. Mike McDanal also had an IPMS Nationals winner in his 1/43 Tameo Ferrari 312 T5. Good work guys. Al Gonzalez showed us three different kits that he currently has under construction. Jerry Cole brought in some decals and parts for Air Racers. John Morrissey showed us three cars he recently finished. David Reinecke had a 1/48 Hasegawa A-4 that he was building for the club project and his computer and ALPs printer

PROGRAM:

The program for the evening was a demonstration by David Reinecke on how to prepare and print decals on the ALPs printer. After the decal presentation, Derek Brown had a video slide show of some of the highlights of the IPMS National Convention in Virginia Beach.

Hanriot HD - 1 /2

'France's Red Headed Stepchild'

The large production numbers of this French designed bi-plane are directly attributed to foreign purchases. Designed by Pierre Dupont, the HD-1 had excellent flying characteristics. The type was competing with the Nieuport Company for the French government's need of low altitude fighters. The Spad VII had the position for high altitude. While Nieuport took up most of the French contracts the Hanriot, an aircraft of better flying qualities was availing the lion's share of its contracts to Italy (901 licensed built aircraft out of 1700 ordered.) To a lesser degree variants were sold to America (about 26 aircraft), Belgium (125 aircraft), France (20-24 aircraft) and Switzerland (16 aircraft.) Highly successful in the hands of Belgium's Count Willy Coppens, Andre de Mulemeester and Jan Olieslagers or Italy's Silvio Scaroni, Mario Fucini and Giorgio Michetti. The first major modification came when the gun was placed centrally rather than being offset. Also, the sight arrangement was moved from the cabane struts to the gun itself. The HD.2 was more than the float plane version. It had a completely revised vertical tail unit and armament.

While the JGMT kit is finely molded multimedia/resin kit, its cost is twice that of either Eduard kits, #8034 Profi-pack or #8039 HD.2. As of this writing Eduard does not have any aftermarket frets available for the 1/48 scale Hanriot kits as they do for their Nieuport 17 types. For this review we will build the Eduard Hanriot HD.1 kit #8018. Before beginning, wash your kit in mild dish soap & water, dry completely, then pre-drill all Rigging and Strut locator holes. Both go through the wing entirely.

Step 1.) Paint all the major components for the cockpit interior and let dry. First add crisscross bracing wires in the frame bays of the Fuselage Sides ( PP A 1 & 2) and to the Cockpit Flooring (PP A 3.) Attach the Fuel/Oil Tank Facade (PP B 4) to the Right Fuselage Side (PP A 1) and Add the Cockpit Flooring (PP A 3.) Next the Rudder Control Bar (PP A 4) and its Torsion Bar (PP A 13) the Air Induction Pipes and Fuel Mixture Chamber (represented as a single unit PP A 8) are added. Lower Fuselage Cross Structures ( PP A 7 & 9) are added and are meant to support the Control Column (PP A 10) as well. Next attach the 'H' shaped Seat Support (PP A 5) and the Fuel Tank Pressure Hand Pump (PP A 11) is added. This pump is smaller than most types on other rotary engined aircraft of this time period. Then the plywood Seat (PP A 12) should be thinned and have lightening holes drilled in its back. The Fuel/Air Mixture Lever (PP A 6) needs a linkage leading forward toward the engine compartment. Rudder Control Wires lead from the installed Rudder Bar (PP A 4) back through the rear Fuselage. Finally install the Control Column (PP A 10) and the Elevator Control Wires at its base. These of course will lead back into the rear Fuselage as well.

Step 2.) The Hanriot Fuselage had an adjustable Horizontal Tail Surface just like the Sopwith Pup , Triplane and Camel. You will need to alter the rear of the Fuselage Halves (PP A 1 & 2) by removing about 3/16 of an inch of their sides from the King Post forward. Check your references for further details. Next unite the Fuselage Halves (PP A 1 & 2) and erase the resultant seams.

Considering the complexity of the Five-colour French camouflage, you may want to paint the major airframe components before bringing them together. These were hand painted using brushes. The edges of the camouflage colours are hard and definite on all surfaces. The later Belgian Hanriots were camouflaged in the 5 colour French camouflage. (Note, the restored HD.1 in Belgium (with the green and white cowl) is not camouflaged properly. The pigments for the doped fabric areas don't contain any aluminum powder.) At this writing it is rumored that a new Windsock Datafile on the Hanriot will come out shortly.

Step 3.) Unite the Cowling (PP A 22 & 23) assembly and when thoroughly set, thin what will be the exposed edges that will show after it is mounted to the Fuselage Firewall. The Rotary Engine (PP B 3) is supposed to represent a 110hp - 120hp LeRhône. To detail this kit's motor the Air Induction Pipes can be added from either solder or brass-rod. You also may want to add the Pushrods at the rear face of the kit's 9 Cylinders. Even though you have a full Cowling these Pushrods will be evident on the bottom Cylinders. You could do the 130hp Clerget with twin Pushrods on the front face of the Cylinders. The only company that has a commercially sold 1/48 rendition of the Clerget is Copper State Models. Be sure to check your references, for the aircraft profile that you’re building. The Rotary Engine Shaft(PP A 20)assembly is represented by a very simplified piece. Unite the Lower Wing (PP B 1) and the Fuselage (PP A 1 & 2) Using scale plan views and a jig made from Children's 'Lego' building blocks. This will hold the parts perpendicular and square until the adhesive sets fast. Score the breaks in the Tail Surfaces for the Rudder (PP B 12) and the Elevators (PP B 2) and their respective stabilizers. Attach these items while the model is still in the jig using additional support blocks to keep them square and level. Let dry thoroughly. When it came to using the kit's Control Horns (PP A 32-35) I prefer to use brass items from Tom's Modelworks brass frets because I use monofilament for rigging. The kit items need to be slightly reduced in thickness and can be used if you’re rigging with sections of fine wire or Heat Stretched sprue.

Step 4.) One question that I have been asked, is if you’re doing Sous Lieutenant Willy Coppens machine (specifically # 17) '...how do you duplicate the 11mm Vickers Balloon Gun as opposed to the usual kit 7mm Vickers .303 ?' The Lafayette Foundation in Denver Colorado USA has an 11mm Vickers and outwardly it is identical to the late model 1918 7mm Vickers. My personal preferences in this situation are the resin items from Rosemont as they have the multiple Jacket Vents seen on the 1918 7mm Vickers. Now were really picking nits! Add the Ammunition Feed Chute (PP A 19) per the kit instructions. The Cabane Trestle Struts (PP A 25) could be a problem if you add per the kit instructions. First, cut off the locator stubs on the Trestle Spine, remove any seams and then install as recommended on the Fuselage Upper Forward Deck.

Step 5.) The Top Wing (PP A 24) comes as a single unit but the original was actually two panels united on the centerline over the Fuselage with the Trestle Spine directly under the panel unions. Now, scribe a deep separation line, chord-wise from the leading edge to the trailing. This should match the Fuselage centerline. When Painting the Top Wing undersurface, you should leave a narrow strip unpainted on the scribed line mentioned previously. This will serve as a contact point for the Trestle Spine. Now drill holes in ends of the Interplane Struts (PP A 26-29) and insert fine brass wire. These should all extend about 1/8th of an inch and will act as locator pins for the Wing sockets. The pins being soft metal will help in making critical adjustments in the wing alignment. Secure the Interplane Struts to the Top Wing (PP A 24) sockets. The Top Wing is then added to the model (still in the jig.) Once the Top Wing is aligned, you can secure it with adhesive to the Interplane Struts through the pre-drilled the Lower Wing Sockets. When thoroughly dry, remove the model from the jig and check the Trestle Spine to make sure it is lined up with the scribed centerline of the Top Wing undersurface. After this has been insured then secure the Top Wing to the Trestle Spine. After this is dry, you can add the shorter splayed Cabane Struts (PP B 6-9.) Before moving on I will rig the model's Wings and Tail surfaces per listed references. Note, Eduard did not show the Aileron cables leaving the undersurface of the Wing Ailerons and leading into the area adjacent to the front Interplane Struts in the upper surface of the Lower Wing. Any brass pin tips that are exposed can be cut flush with the Wing surfaces. Thank goodness for motor tools.

Step 6 - 7.) Complete the Under Carriage Assembly (PP B 10,11 & 15) and wrap upholstery thread around their unions to represent the Bungee Chord Shock Absorbers. Check your references. Next add the Wheels (PP B 13 & 14), Tail Skid (PP A 38 ) and the Stabilizer Struts (PP A 30 7 31) I replaced with brass-rod of an appropriate diameter. The Propeller is a typical profile for the LeRhône rotary. Clear-coat your model and add the windscreen with white glue.
